He and my great-grandmother were both born in Manhattan, but unfortunately divorced shortly after the war as he suffered from alcoholism related to his PTSD. His natural charisma still led to his becoming a successful realtor in California, where he eventually met his second wife and rekindled his relationship with my grandfather. A veteran of the US Navy and the only grandparent I had who let me know just how cherished I was. He was a quick-witted guy up until my last conversation with him last week. He'll be dearly missed, and I feel blessed to have the finances to make it to his funeral Saturday. He tragically died from a work-related accident when my father was just 15. His death was so tragic for the family that my grandmother fell into a deep depression that led to excessive drinking. She fell asleep on the couch with a lit cigarette one day and passed away in a house fire, which left my father and his two sisters orphaned when he was 17. <i class="material-icons" data-template="memories-icon">stars</i><br/>Mannie Sellers, Navy<br/>Posted by: Natalie G.<br/><div class='remember-wall-long-description'>My maternal great-grandfather graduated the US Naval Academy in 1926 as a URL and served until 1964, at which point he had achieved the rank of 4-Star Captain. At the time he retired from the Navy, he was serving as second assistant to the Assistant Attorney General in Washington, D.C.. After 47 years of federal service, he retired from the Department of Justice in 1977. A gentleman through and through, he was married to my great-grandmother for 47 years until she passed away, and he raised my grandfather as his only child as if he were his own. He even helped him to find his biological father after a rather nasty divorce had left his mother cutting all communications with him. William Glenn McMinn served in the United States Air Force from 1951 to 1955. He was honorably discharged on April 15, 1955. He served in Africa and various bases in the United States and was an aircraft propeller mechanic along with certification in fundamental aircraft and engine mechanics.
