George Arthur Bailey enlisted at age 19 in Company A, the 1stMassachusetts Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade, 2nd Division, 3rd Corps, on May 10, 1861, at the beginning of the Civil War. He was wounded in May of 1862 and taken prisoner that July. He was held in Libby Prison until October when he was paroled, resettled, and able to rejoin his regiment. In January of 1864, George was wounded at Gettysburg. In March, he was commissioned Captain of Company H, 37th U.S. Colored Troops. A long march in September of 1864 caused George's leg wound to reopen, so he resigned on October 5th.
