John graduated from Central Davidson High School, class of 1961, and went on to serve his country in the Army during the Vietnam War where he earned three Bronze Stars among other medals and recognition. John was a proud veteran and patriot whose love for his country shined through his sacrifice and service.To honor his commitment to the military and for his 80th birthday, Mayor Karen Alexander of Salisbury declared July 10, 2023 ”John Beck Day” in the city and a flag which was flown over the Capital Building in Washington DC was presented to him.After his military career, John worked at PPG Industries for 32 years and retired in 2003. He also served as a volunteer fireman for the South Lexington Volunteer Fire Department, and in 1984 was awarded Fireman of the Year.John served as the Chaplain for the Davidson County Honor Guard and saw to it that other veterans were cared for and honored in a way that showed respect and dignity.

In memory of all of the men and women who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our Country. Prior to death, Carl Wayne Thompson from Salisbury, NC, was awarded the National Defense Service Metal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Metal, Vietnam Service Metal, and the Vietnam Campaign Metal. He was then awarded posthumously the Purple Heart, Good Conduct Metal, and the Combat Infantryman Badge. One brother lost but never forgotten.
