Civil Air Patrol (CAP)
As a Total Force partner and Auxiliary of the U.S. Air Force, Civil Air Patrol is there to search for and find the lost, provide comfort in times of disaster and work to keep the homeland safe. Its 60,000 members selflessly devote their time, energy and expertise toward the well-being of their communities, while also promoting aviation and related fields through aerospace/STEM education and helping shape future leaders through CAP’s cadet program. Civil Air Patrol’s missions for America are many, and today’s adults and cadets perform their duties with the same vigilance as its founding members — preserving CAP’s 75-year legacy of service while maintaining its commitment to nearly 1,500 communities nationwide. As one of Wreaths Across America's first partners, CAP has been actively fundraising for the program since 2006. In fact, two CAP volunteers in Maine were the ones who first recognized the potential to expand what was then a small program begun by the Worcester Wreath Company by tapping into the thousands of service-minded CAP members across America. More and more participate every year — obtaining wreath sponsorships from the public, laying wreaths and conducting ceremonies to mark the day with pomp, circumstance and patriotism. Patriot Guard Riders
National nonprofit Wreaths Across America (WAA) is proud to announce the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Patriot Guard Riders (PGR) in an effort to build a stronger awareness for each group’s common missions, while supporting events throughout the nation. Founded in 2007, and headquartered in Columbia Falls, Maine, WAA is best known for its annual wreath-laying ceremonies each December. The organization’s yearlong mission is to Remember the fallen, Honor those who serve, and Teach the next generation the value of freedom. Now in nearly 4,000 communities across the country, WAA volunteers are committed to sharing the mission through education and stories of service and success. Founded as a national nonprofit in 2005 to shield families of fallen heroes from those that would disrupt the services of their loved ones, the Patriot Guard Riders has grown to include thousands of members across all 50 states. As the organization’s membership has grown, so has the scope of its mission. PGR also honors first responders as well as military veterans. Additionally, the organization has an active Help on The Homefront (HOTH) program, which aids our veterans and their families. The signed MOU between the two groups focuses on engagement with PGR members and WAA volunteers to create opportunities for joint community service activities that bring awareness to both groups’ missions. PGR will expand its participation in the WAA Group Sponsorship Program – there are already more than 120 PGR groups participating nationwide – which raises awareness and sponsorships to place wreaths and support programming while offering PGR an option for fundraising for the important work they do in their communities year-round. “Since WAA was founded, Patriot Guard Riders have been involved in the mission and its members play an important part in ensuring respect for our veterans and their families,” said Karen Worcester, executive director of WAA. “Our combined efforts will no doubt help to shape and inform the next generation of patriots.” National President of PGR, Bob Dorey said, “Our membership is very supportive of the families of the fallen, as is Wreaths Across America! We are looking forward to working more collaboratively as we support these families and remember and honor their loved ones.” This year, National Wreaths Across America Day will take place on Saturday, December 16, 2023, at over 3,700 participating locations nationwide. “The experience of placing a wreath at the final resting place of one of our nation’s veterans and understanding the healing that this simple gesture has for so many families and the opportunity it provides to share the stories of these heroes, makes this an important partnership,” Bob concluded. United States of America Vietnam War Commemoration
Wreaths Across America Recommits to the United States of America Vietnam War Commemoration Wednesday, The United States of America Vietnam War Commemoration flag was presented to the national nonprofit Wreaths Across America (WAA) in the Pentagon’s award-winning Vietnam War Exhibit, reaffirming WAA’s Commemorative Partnership. WAA was among the initial organizations to join the wide-ranging list of Commemorative Partners supporting the efforts of this congressionally chartered Commemoration, which was established under the Secretary of Defense. Since first becoming a partner in 2012, WAA has had the distinct honor of conducting 2,190 welcome home ceremonies for Vietnam veterans across the country, presenting each veteran a Vietnam Veteran Lapel Pin, and thanking them for their service, valor and sacrifice. “As the Nation commemorated National Vietnam War Veterans Day on March 29, we are grateful to have Commemorative Partners like Wreaths Across America,” said retired U.S. Army Major General Peter (Pete) Aylward, director of The United States of America Vietnam War Commemoration. “Their mission to Remember, Honor and Teach complements our objectives of thanking and honoring our Vietnam veterans and their families in the communities where they live.” “We have learned so much about our Vietnam veterans and their families through this partnership with the Commemoration, so much so, that it has inspired us and our volunteers to do more,” said Karen Worcester, executive director of Wreaths Across America. “As an expansion of our TEACH mission, we’ll be adding an interactive learning tool about Vietnam veterans to our Mobile Education Exhibit that travels the country, and we are recommitting to not only welcoming these veterans home, but in sharing their stories and helping ensure the next generation know what they sacrificed for our freedoms.” This year, National Wreaths Across America Day is Saturday, December 18, 2021. It is always a free event and open to all people (conditions permitting). For more information on how to volunteer locally or sponsor a wreath for a hero, please visit www.wreathsacrossamerica.org.
